Library, Cancer Center Sponsor Children's Book Drive

Middletown — On Saturday, November 18, 2006, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center and Russell Library will co-sponsor a special book drive to officially kick-off the Cancer Center’s “Light One Little Candle” program that provides new children’s books to cancer patients, free of charge.  The event will be held at the Russell Library, 23 Broad Street, in Middletown.

The special program is geared to children ages 3 to 5, but all ages are welcome. It will feature readings of favorite bunny tales, along with a visit from the main character of the book, “Pat the Bunny.” There will also be refreshments, coloring, and crafts for the children.

The Light One Little Candle Foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes reading as a means for parents with cancer to connect with their children. The Foundation has partnered with the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center to provide for the distribution of new children’s books to patients living with cancer through the Center’s Patient Resource Library. The Foundation was created by the late Dr. Joelle Pauporte, a young mother with terminal breast cancer, who learned that no matter how sick, exhausted or overwhelmed she felt while undergoing treatment, she and her daughter could find comfort sitting together and reading.


During the event at the Russell Library, adults can purchase new children’s books to donate to the Light One Little Candle program at the Hospital’s Cancer Center. Broad Street Books of Middletown will have a large variety of children’s books on hand for purchase that day and a computer will be available in the Library to allow purchase of books online. Following the event, individuals can purchase new children’s books and drop them off at several different Middletown locations, including the Patient Resource Library at the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center, 536 Saybrook Road; the Russell Library Children’s Department, 23 Broad Street; or at Broad Street Books, 45 Broad Street.
