Renal (kidney) Scans

Before a renal scan:

  • You may receive a blocking agent to prevent other organs from absorbing the isotope.
  • You’ll be asked to empty your bladder.
  • Then you’ll drink several glasses of water.

During the scan:

  • You’ll receive an isotope by injection.
  • You’ll be positioned in front of a gamma camera. It’s important to lie still.

Scans may take ½ to 1 hour.

After the scan: Drink lots of water to help your body clear the isotope.
